Enter your run size, unit costs and setup budget to estimate your total launch cost, your landed cost per unit, and the retail price you would need to hit your target margin. All figures are in Australian dollars.

Most Australian skincare founders spend between $8,000 and $30,000 to launch a small first range, depending on run size, packaging tier and how much branding and photography they outsource. Use the calculator below to estimate your own total launch cost and landed cost per unit.

What goes into the cost of launching a skincare brand

Launch costs fall into three buckets: stock (what it costs to make and package the units you will sell), one-off setup (branding, photography, store build, compliance) and launch marketing. Stock scales with your run size; setup does not.

The single biggest lever is run size. A founder who commits to 5,000 units per SKU with a traditional minimum order quantity spends tens of thousands before a single sale. A founder who produces a few hundred units validates demand first and reinvests revenue into the next run.

How to price from your landed cost

Landed cost per unit is manufacturing plus packaging and labelling, before shipping to the customer. Australian direct-to-consumer skincare brands commonly target a 70–80% gross margin, which means retail is roughly three to five times landed cost.

If you plan to sell wholesale or through retail, price so that a 50% wholesale discount still leaves a workable margin — that usually means anchoring retail at a higher multiple from day one rather than discounting later.

Frequently asked questions

How much does it cost to start a skincare brand in Australia?

A focused launch of two or three products with a small production run typically costs between $8,000 and $30,000 in Australia once you include stock, branding, photography, an online store, compliance and a modest launch marketing budget. Committing to large minimum order quantities is what pushes budgets past $50,000.

What is a realistic landed cost per unit for skincare?

Most small-batch Australian skincare products land between $6 and $15 per unit including packaging and labelling, depending on formulation complexity, container type and run size.

Do I need a minimum order quantity to manufacture skincare?

No. Some Australian manufacturers, including Brand & Bottle's Melbourne facility, produce small first runs with no minimum order quantity, so you can validate demand before scaling production.

How many units do I need to sell to break even?

Divide your total launch cost by your gross profit per unit (retail price minus landed cost). At a $12 landed cost, a $49 retail price and a $15,000 launch budget, break-even is roughly 405 units.
